Statement from the Regional Chair on honouring Black History Month
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today (February 1), marks the beginning of Black History Month in Durham Region—a time to honour the history and strength of people of African descent, and celebrate the tremendous contributions—past and present—that Black Canadians have made, and continue to make, in our communities. It is also a moment to pause and reflect on the history, legacy and present-day impact of anti-Black racism and oppression.
This evening, in collaboration with local municipalities and community partners, we will host the Region’s Black History Month celebration, Together We Rise Durham. The event will showcase amazing Black talent from Durham Region and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area; and conclude with an engaging presentation where we will hear from panellists on Black History, intersectionality and joy.
This Black History Month, let us listen, learn and reflect so that we may find ways to address anti-Black racism and systemic barriers for a future Durham Region that is more welcoming and inclusive of everyone.”
