2019 Council Accessibility Challenge

Councillor Lynn Campbell using an accessibility swing accompanies by Chair Munroe, BAACOn Monday, November 4, 2019, members of the Township of Brock Council took part in the Accessibility Challenge organized by the Brock Accessibility Advisory Committee. Members of Council were outfitted with canes, walkers, and wheelchairs to limit mobility, goggles that simulated a visual impairment, and earplugs that simulated a hearing impairment as they completed specific tasks in several downtown Beaverton businesses and at the Beaverton Harbour. Thank you to those businesses who took part in the challenge.

The challenge — which was held previously in Cannington in 2012, Beaverton in 2013, Sunderland in 2014, and came back in Cannington in 2015 and 2017 — has served as a learning experience for members of Council, as some had trouble navigating the local sidewalks and crossing the street safely. Others ran into difficulty getting through the door of some local businesses or had trouble navigating through narrow aisles.

The Brock Accessibility Advisory Committee provides advice and recommendations to the Council of the Township of Brock on matters related to the identification, removal and prevention of barriers for persons with disabilities. The Committee is comprised of volunteer members and a representative from Council. The Committee meets the third Tuesday of every other month and the meetings are open to the public.
